Electricity Production

Turkey is one of the prominent countries in the world with a high geothermal energy potential. Turkey is expected to become the lead country in Europe in geothermal power generation within a few years. Intensified work is observed over the past few years within Büyük Menderes Graben, where SDS Energy also holds licenses. The introduction of Geothermal Law and other relevant legislation brought new regulations and incentives to the sector and this encouraged the companies for further investments in the region.

SDS Energy has acquired many licenses in the Aegean region, where high geothermal potential exists, mainly in Aydin province within the Büyük Menderes Graben and Bakircay Graben in Izmir. Licenses have been acquired following comprehensive analysis and technical due diligence work. Licenses with insufficient potential have been abandoned and best sites have been developed.

At present, SDS Energy is in possession of 4 operation licenses in Aydın-Kuyucak, Buharkent, Germencik and Söke and one operation license in İzmir-Dikili (valid for 30 years). as well as exploration licenses within the same provinces. The total area of the operation licenses amounts to 21700 hectares and exploration licenses 5600 hectares.

In the sites extensive geo-chemical, geo-physical exploration (resistivity, MT, gravity, magnetic), structural and geological mapping, and assessment studies have been conducted through competent companies/experts. Following the exploration works in the sites, wells with varying depths have been drilled and the findings and data have been evaluated thus identifying the potential of the sites.

2 deep production wells have been drilled and successfully completed in Aydın-Kuyucak license area. Following well tests and evaluation of data, it has been observed that both wells are suitable for power generation. Following the assessment of the data and analysis of the whole site the technical team came to the conclusion that over 150 MWe power generation potential exists in the license area. Next step in the license area will be to make further drillings in the two present well locations and construct power plants (images and videos of well drillings can be seen at section 'Sites and Field Studies').

Furthermore, production drilling work is completed in Aydın Germencik license area and it has been estimated that over 20 MWe power generation potential exists in the license area (images and videos of well drillings can be seen at section 'Sites and Field Studies'). Deep production drilling work is ongoing at Aydın-Söke license areas where substantial power plant potential is estimated to exist.

In addition to conventional geothermal power generation, SDS Energy has been working on the Enhanced Geothermal Systems - EGS (Hot dry rock) R&D project in İzmir-Dikili since 2010. This is the first EGS project in Turkey. In the aforementioned area, geological, geophysical, geochemical, geotechnical works, satellite image analyses have been completed and geomechanical studies related to rock mechanics are in progress. This project is conducted within the context of cooperation with universities and academicians. Necessary cooperation has been established with universities and intuitions in Turkey and Germany.

Our aim is to finalize this work and construct a pilot power plant generating electricity through the use of EGS technology. Successful implementation of this project will pave the way to generate substantial amounts of power through the use of this technology in Turkey.

Presentations have been made in international geothermal conferences as regards EGS R&D project. In 2013, in Potsdam and Essen geothermal conferences in Germany, presentations on the EGS project have been made by the company officials. Articles have been published in international and local journals. The latest article entitled "Preliminary geological, geochemical and numerical study on the first EGS project in Turkey" was published in 2015 in Environmental Earth Sciences journal.
